A tricky set of choices! I'm confident the server code will be released, but whether it'll be in 2008, I'm much less certain - the only rumblings I've heard have been to the effect it's still some way off, regrettably.
HTML-on-a-prim seems very likely, though it's unclear how much consideration's been given to potential security issues.
Jabber also feels quite likely, as that would leverage existing code, perhaps even forming a replacement for the current system.
And traffic's surely going to get the axe, or at least a fundamental change, such as counting unique visits rather than purely avatar-minutes.
An acquisition? Possible, but I'd be fearful for LL's future if that came about - seldom do takeovers result in a preservation of the smaller unit's autonomy, and there's very little any buyer could offer, other than funding, which seems to be adequate as is. Maybe a significant partnership of some kind, such as Sun and Cisco wanting to become proven partners in grid infrastructure, making them an easy, certified choice for third-party grids?

Good points!
I hesitated on selecting the "major competitor of SL", as HiPiHi is in Beta and Multiverse is in active release. But there I think *major* is the big factor-- i.e. will either or those start building a large active user base in 2008?
