Bettina's Choice: The Metaverse Maven Finds the Best of SL
When Malcom Gladwell gets around to profiling her, he'll immediately identify Bettina Tizzy as a Second Life "maven", exploring and identifying the wonders of Second Life with an inexhaustible energy that convinces you she's uncovered the very best the world has to offer, often before anyone else. Ms. Tizzy introduced me to the voice-powered Parsec, and several other marvels; her blog Not Possible IRL (named after her group of the same name) is a buzzing repository of these findings, most recently:
- David Rumsey's Maps: A renowned map collector is now in Seconds Life, uploading his archive of 150,000 maps of many eras into SL, working with a metaverse developer to translate them into topographic scale models. Bettina's photos from the project are spectacular, like something from a steampunk movie. (As above.)
- DramaLibre, a dance club run by a real life couple who've rebuilt the place 64 times in various, wildly deverse themes (pirate ship, giant kitchen, etc.)
- A Resident named GM Kurosawa, who's created a way to spawn a horde of mini-me avatars who follow him around, as he walks.
Read about them and more at NPIRL, the ongoing journal of the maven at play.

"inexhaustible energy" and "uncovered the very best the world has to offer"... I couldn't think of a better way to describe Bettina. She's all of that and more. I'm sincerely grateful to count her among my best friends in SL. The NPIRL blog is one of the handful of SL blogs on my daily reader list that makes me sit up and pay attention on a regular basis (other than NWN - of course ;-)
If I find myself exploring a place that blows my mind, chances are Bettina invited me there, is there with me, or has already been there first.
