61 Avatars: Second Life Musicians And Fans Flash Mob Popular Music Social Network

The_sixty_one_top_listeners The Sixty One is a very cool new social network that combines the promotion of indy music with community-based gaming.  Musicians upload their songs, and registered users bump the songs they like.  If other users bump songs that you've bumped, you win game points-- so basically, the high score goes to people with the best musical taste, and by extension, the best music on the site gets the biggest Digg-style publicity push.  (At least in theory.)

Here's where the cool social emergence comes in: according to tireless SL blogger Vint Falken, Second Life musicians and fans are taking over The Sixty One.  That might be overstating somewhat, but right now, you can see the SL avatar of "JeniliaC" listed as a top Listener on the site's front page.  Due to extensive number of Second Life users in the blogosphere, on Flickr, and other Web 2.0 sites, Vint speculates, Residents "already have their networks that are linked to their avatars... they only need to ‘export’ those links to TheSixtyOne.com."  With so many talented performers using SL as a promotion platform, I wouldn't be surprised to see those links keep growing.

It might be noted that iWex at the top of that list is an SL resident as well.
Our in-world group is now ~125 residents strong.
For a list of artists that play live in SL that I'm aware have accounts on thesixtyone.com see this post: http://www.lovelymachine.com/Dolmere/2008/03/thesixtyone_sl_artist_list.html

I think it rulez when Residents use their Second Life names out-of-world!

SL has the potential to be a channel for artists to break into the mainstream. All we need now is for more people to pay attention. thesixtyone is a good start.
