Gardenstock_2

The Gardenstock Music Festival kicks off on Saturday, June 7th with a full day of performances from some fantastic musicians who are part of The Sixty One music site. The remarkable lineup begins at 7 AM and wraps up at 9 PM; over that time, fourteen different performers will take the stage. Second Life musicians have a big presence on The Sixty One and Hamlet wrote about the ways that SL has had an effect on this social network music site. This is the first of a series of musical events taking place in the Garden of NPIRL Delights and will provide opportunity to explore this fascinating four sim art installation that features over 100 artists and is a collaboration between the Not Possible in Real Life Group and Rezzable. In Rezzable Design (click here to teleport directly to the stage).

Also this week: Discuss the Zoo of Business Innovation, Ballet Pixelle dances, and collective performance art on borders.  All that and more after the jump...

3:30 PM – Thinkers: Ruth, RIP
Second Life’s default avatar was nicknamed Ruth; sometimes, your avatar would return to this basic shape and this was known as being "Ruthed.”  Many found that becoming Ruth was rather disconcerting, so Ruth is soon to be no more and will be replaced by cloud.  But WHY was being Ruthed so disconcerting?  Was Ruth telling us something about ourselves? 7 PM – Borders: A Collective Art Practice Research Group Perfomance
This mixed reality performance art event is the culmination of 10 weeks of talking to collectives from San Diego and Tijuana about collective practice, online public space and social engagement. The RL performance takes place at the intersection of the borderlands of Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California as well as within Second Life.  This performance engages in a variety of questions:

  • What are the borders of online public space? How do they relate to the borders of our "first life"?
  • What are the relationships between borders and prisons? How are these separate but related modern features a part of the infrastructure that separates the global north from the global south?
  • How do borders produce gender and how are those dynamics affected by the seeming gender freedom online public space inhabited by avatars? How is gender deviance perceived and discussed in online spaces, in prisons, in borders?
  • Is synchronized dancing as fun in second life as it is in first life?

SUBMITTING EVENTS FOR COVERAGE IN New World Notes

Every Thursday morning, NWN highlights events for the upcoming weekend into next Wednesday. If you'd like an event to be considered, send the description and event link to Charlanna Beresford via IM or e-mail her at charlannab@gmail.com. You can also contact Lanna through her Facebook profile, where she's listed as "Charlanna Beresford".

Main guidelines:
1 - Events for the coming week must be received by Tuesday Noon SLT.

2 - Include all the relevant info-- day, time, and especially the SLURL to the event location.

3 - Please send related graphics such as screenshots or photo of the event site, if available.

4 - Events with artistic, cultural, scientific, political, creative, and/or educational value preferred.

5 - Events sponsored or promoted by real world corporations are welcome, as long they serve and entertain the Second Life community, and/or foster Resident-made content (live music, builds, scripting, fashion, games, etc.)  Events that merely promote the company or organization's Second Life presence are not generally appropriate; you may instead consider advertising your event or service on New World Notes.

6 - Mature-rated events are permissible, but listing descriptions should be PG-13.  Political and religious events are encouraged, though those of an extreme or non-inclusive variety are rarely included.

7 - Bonus consideration given to game-related or machinima events, and for events with "I've never seen that in SL before" value.
