Second Life Residents Raise Record-Making $200,000 In Linden Dollars For American Cancer Society

Slrfl08_002 Extraordinary, milestone news: this weekend, Rik Riel reports from last weekend's closing ceremonies, 1000 runners from 89 teams raised nearly USD$200,000 for Relay for Life 2008, a collaboration with the Second Life community and the American Cancer Society.  This is the most raised for a single non-profit campaigin in Second Life, and if I'm not mistaken, the most raised by the members of any virtual world. The final tally on Saturday was L$52,050,171, to be more precise, and because the L$ to USD$ conversion rate seems to have dipped slightly since then, that's now $193,323.   Last year's SL Relay for Life total was about $100K.  The number of regular Second Life Residents has not measurably increased since Summer 2007, which suggests that Residents were twice as generous in their donations-- and Relay volunteers, even more creative and eneregtic with their fundraising efforts.  Image: Rik Riel.

That's really cool! I'm going to add this to my list of things to use to convince "non-believers" that something REALLY interesting is happening with Second Life. Got a screenshot--I'll put another power point slide into the presentation I do for educators. Yea Residents!

Cheers,

Wow and Kudos! I am thrilled to know how successful Second Life can be at raising money for Charity. I am part of a team working on a big event in August, SL Peacefest 08, which will be raising money for several charities. I am really interested in learning more about how you all managed to pull this together! WTG!
