SLURL vs. GVURL -- New Metaverse Land Mapping And Teleport System Vies With Lindens' Own Web-to-SL App
Besides the utility of making it possible to turn virtual X,Y,Z location coordinates in Second Life into an active web link, I've never been totally happy with the Lindens' SLURL widget, which has few features beyond that.
The alternative? Perhaps this: Metaverse blog AltoXeno has a provocative review of Gridaverse, which not only offers web-to-SL teleportation on an interactive web map of the Second Life grid, but it's claimed, will eventually offer that function for OpenSim grids, as well.
It's from the SL-based company Skidz Partz, and judging by AltoXeno's review, at least, it's way more robust than SLURL, offering searchable locations and available land for sale (among other utilities.) I haven't had a chance to try it out much, so caveats are in order. One thing's clear, however: As the SL world grows larger, and OpenSim grids become more numerous, whoever owns the most popular virtual world location portal could become the metaverse version of Google Maps. You can actually see if it is a PG sim you are about to teleport into.
Just one of many interesting bits of data you can preview before teleporting.
Nice chunk of work.
