Chestnut's Choices 2/19 - 2/25: Winston Ackland Roleplay Concert, StormEye Art Opening, Mardi Gras & Much More

 

Chestnut Rau’s weekly round-up of upcoming SL events…

The Erie Isle role play sim and musician Winston Ackland will come together on  Saturday, February 21st at 12:00 PM for an unusual performance.  Winston will play live at Erie Isle's Phantom Theater as part of an ongoing role play storyline that incorporates the region's cast of characters. Sim owner Colleen Marjeta (above) the staff at Erie Isle and the Ackland camp are tight-lipped about plot details but promise surprises and plenty of openings for spontaneous role play.

Erie Isle offers immersive role play from the frightening to the dramatic with elements of mystery, romance, combat and lust.  Winston Ackland offers clever original songs and quirky adaptations of obscure covers from a blend of rock, bossa nova, and jazz.  In December of 08, Winston Ackland's cover of "Lithium" was included in the blockbuster hit, "Marley and Me," which was written about here on NWN.

6PM Discussion – Mechanisms of Climate Change

B. Opens Today – SL London Arts Festival

A week long celebration of SL art will take place in the heart of virtual London  beginning today.  The results of photography, machinima and sculpture competitions will be presented and there will be an art market with graphic an illustrative work from artists around the grid displayed for sale.  SL London is a fabulous place and the addition of great virtual art makes this an event worth seeing.  In Knightsbridge.  Click here to teleport. 

4PM – Freestar Tammas at the Penn State Dance Marathon kickoff

The Penn State Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropic event in the world. This 46-hour dance marathon kicks off tonight at Penn State's University Park campus.   You can attend this famous RL benefit to fight pediatric cancer in Second Life with the fantastic Freestar Tamas who kicks off the event.  At PSU World Campus. Starts at Midnight – Digital Angels Weekend to Benefit Australian Fire Victims

Surreal Babi (above) is working with many others to coordinate 72 hours of live music, DJs and dozens of content creators who have donated their talents for this event. 1PM - Opening -- StormEye Installation by Douglas Story and Desdemona Enfield

StormEye is a large scale, fully immersive art installation by Douglas Story and Desdemona Enfield.  The huge work is located high in the sky above The Aho Museum on the New Media Consortium campus.   For more information about the artists, the installation and a short teaser video please go to the StormEye blog.

To experience StormEye visitors walk through a complex tunnel comprised of more than 1,000 prims.  Once inside you are surrounded by moving images and sound which cycles between calm blue skies with puffy cotton ball clouds and dark turbulent purple skies, driving rain and random flashes of lightening. The experience is beautiful and compelling. I had the pleasure of touring the installation with Douglas Story and was really impressed with both the art and the artist.  This is a must see event.   In NMC Campus West. Click here to teleport.

2PM – Music and Dance to Support Australian Bushfire Victims

Cellandra Zon of the LightDancers performs with live musician Louis Volare,followed by Mankind Tracer and CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster.  Sales and proceeds from this great lineup of artists will benefit the Australian Red Cross and people hurt by the devasating fires in Australia. 6PM - 9PM Grace McDunnough followed by Frogg and Jaycatt on Heron Island

Grace's sultry voice, personalized versions of your favorite songs and an ever-changing set list make this show one of the best hours of live music on the grid. Expect fantastic original songs, many of which are co-written with Salome Strangelove, and a lively crowd.  Up after Grace are the funtastic Frogg Marlowe and Jaycatt Nico.  Their show includes brilliant harmonies, sweet guitar work accompanied by inspired piano with a joke or two thrown in for good measure. 7AM – NCI Class on Land Ownership Basics

6PM - Copper Robot:  Mitch Wagner Interviews SL Business Leaders

Mitch Wagner interview two of SL's leading business owners, Bill Stirling and ArminasX Saiman.   Bill Stirling is the founder of the SS Galaxy which is certainly one of the largest builds in-world.  The Galaxy was saved from deletion by an infusion of cash from an anonymous benefactor this week, so this should be an illuminating discussion.  ArminasX Saiman is the creator of Electonic Pixels, a great particle shop.  He is also the author of one of my favorite blogs Second Effects where he offers insights about running a business in SL.  Copper Robot is recorded live and podcast so if you can't be there you can listen here  at your leisure.  In World2Worlds.  Click here to teleport.

Noon - Metanomics with Host Robert Bloomfield and guest Alice Krueger

Join host Robert Bloomfield and guest Gentle Heron (Alice Krueger in RL) to learn about how technology provides accessibility in virtual worlds.   Gentle Heron has quietly helped large numbers of people with disabilities learn and explore in Second Life.  Imagine what it means to be visually or hearing-impaired within a virtual world interface, the challenge of typing with your toes, or using voice recognition software. Event Submission Guidelines:

1. Events for the coming week must be received by Tuesday Noon SLT.
2. Include all the relevant info; day, time, and especially the SLURL to the event location.
3. Please send related graphics such as screenshots or photo of the event site, if available.
4. Events with artistic, cultural, scientific, political, creative, and/or educational value preferred.
5. Events sponsored or promoted by real world corporations are welcome, as long they serve and entertain the Second Life community, and/or foster Resident-made content (live music, builds, scripting, fashion, games, etc.)  Events that merely promote the company or organization's Second Life presence are not generally appropriate; you may instead consider advertising your event or service on New World Notes.
6. Mature-rated events are permissible, but listing descriptions should be PG-13.  Political and religious events are encouraged, though those of an extreme or non-inclusive variety are rarely included.
7. Bonus consideration given to game-related or machinima events, and for events with "I've never seen that in SL before!" value.

The Carnival of Massafra is considered one of the more important of the Puglia. This because, with the exception of the other carnivals, the majority of the masked course is not barred, and citizens and the participates directly all' animation and to the fun, stimulated from the choreographies and the scenography of the wagons and the allegorical groups that parade along the main course of the country.
