Hetero Eye For The Straight Avatar Guy

Jude Fashion options

Gauge Laville of We Hate What You're Wearing has some solid tips for the fashion-conscious, budget-aware straight male avatar. The fashion model on the left got that way with just L$51, and the dude adjacent him, L$2699L. Mr. Laville's advice stems from this realization of his: Well-dressed men in SL are "1. Alts. Many of which were created by female residents. 2. Gay men. 3. Myself, and about five other straight men." Maybe a debatable breakdown, but dig the T-shirt with the bullet hole in the heart.

Toxic Menges

You know ... it does seem like there is a dearth of straight single men in SL. Believe me, I have looked.

Arahan Claveau

It's funny that so many supposedly heterosexual men in SL dress up their avatars to look like total queens. Like the whole str8 neko thing, I mean c'mon guys, you ain't convincing anyone.

Valentina Kendal

/me scratches her head. So let me get this straight :-) - the lesbians in SL are str8 guys looking for hot girl-girl sex and str8 girls looking to experiment (resbians), and the good looking guys in SL are women and gay men. And the dogs are people too. I'm getting me to a nunnery!

Valiant Westland

It's TOUGH to find a high quality clothes, hair, etc. that is designed for a professional male in his 40's. I don't want to look like a "hood/club rat" in college, or a young gay boy-model. I'm neither.

I would love to see designers that offered styles similar to where I shop online like: Paul Fredrick http://www.paulfredrick.com/ or Blue Fly for Men http://www.bluefly.com/Mens-Designer-Clothing/cat60004/department.fly

My testosterone levels also mean that unlike many of my female friends, I prefer "hunting," to "shopping." I would love to see SL designers offer a men's wardrobe subscription service, that would supply my virtual closet with a variety of new business and casual outfits each month, that matched my style and preferences. I would be glad to pay $15-$20 USD a month to have a continuously "fresh" wardrobe that I didn't have to spend hours hunting for.

Mitch Wagner

Like Valiant said: I want my human alt to look good in SL, but I don't want him to look like a boy-model, or to look threatening. A friend recommended a shop that sells C&W styles, ZVZ Ultra Designs -- embroidered cowboy shirts, jeans, decorated cowboy boots. They're fun, and they look good.

Ari Blackthorne

Ditto what Mitch said.

I read that post this morning and replied there and my thing is this:

You know what? The "before" picture looks pretty good, too. A fresh change of clothing to *suit his style* and he's good to go. Just because the "makover artiste" thinks the bad-boy-grungy-filthy-greaer look is hot doesn't mean that "artiste's" word is the end-all.

That's my point.
It's like all the EVIL facelights that proliferate the grid (gee, thanks Torley! LOL) - the fact is this: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". So unless that "artiste" is partnering with that guy...

LOL You get the idea. ;)

Gauge Laville

Ari and Mitch both make excellent points. Neither of the examples shown, in my post, are necessarily representative of my personal taste.
They are more in line with a look that seems to be popular, but poorly executed, in SL. I prefer a definitively masculine look, and the response to one of my latest plurks ( http://www.plurk.com/p/w75c8 )suggest an overwhelming majority of female residents do as well.

Oboreruhito Gabilondo

Here, here. Finding good men's clothes in SL is harder than shopping for land, probably because there aren't many designers who care to target what's likely a niche market.

Nexii Malthus

Since when does muscle definition mean well dressed?

So if you painted stronger shading on your muscles in RL you'd look well dressed?

Gahum Riptide

Hey Nexii, thanks for not reading what the point of Gauge's article was about. You show a great amount of sensitivity, openness to others' ideas and a fabulous amount of understanding outside of your bubble. Thank you.
