For general social use, I'd like to see a webcam interface capable of "reading" a seated, typing/mousing figure and translating it into an active standing figure -- without conscious direction by the user.

Rather than waggling a finger to trigger a head nod, the system should trigger a nod when you naturally nod in response to something. It should more your avatar in response to slight leans forward or to the sides. It might even change the camera angle in response to eye movement.

The less the end user has to think about it, the more natural, intuitive, subtle and powerful the interface becomes.
NeilC commented on 'Jeffrey Ventrella on Kinect & Avatar Puppeteering's Future'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341bf74053ef014e87d947f1970d2011-04-16T11:24:09Z2011-04-16T11:24:09ZNeilChttp://blog.knowsense.co.ukqarl - Predator is very very impressive for sure - it isn't obvious to me yet though if you could...
qarl - Predator is very very impressive for sure - it isn't obvious to me yet though if you could get reliable depth info out of it, which is one of the big features of Kinect.
Riisu commented on 'Jeffrey Ventrella on Kinect & Avatar Puppeteering's Future'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341bf74053ef014e87d4c38b970d2011-04-15T19:13:44Z2011-04-15T19:13:44ZRiisuI can hardly wait for the day when I'll have to say "Do what I say, not what I do!"...
I can hardly wait for the day when I'll have to say "Do what I say, not what I do!" to a computer... :-/
qarl commented on 'Jeffrey Ventrella on Kinect & Avatar Puppeteering's Future'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341bf74053ef01538de16637970b2011-04-15T19:01:18Z2011-04-15T19:01:18Zqarlhttp://www.qarl.com/Adeon - you can do the same sorts of things without the special hardware if you're smart about it: http://www.i-programmer.info/news/105-artificial-intelligence/2310-predator-better-than-kinect.html
Adeon - you can do the same sorts of things without the special hardware if you're smart about it:
