The Oculus Rift Turns SL's Insilico Into a VR Experience
You've probably seen the famed Second Life city Insilico before, but here's what it looks like when seen through the Oculus Rift:
This is possible thanks to the latest SL viewer from CtrlAltStudio (which really needs its own name), which offers basic integration of the Oculus Rift with Second Life. Notably, the dude who shot this video (YouTube name: Vidyadude) is not really an SL user:
"I don't usually play Second Life," he tells me, "I just wanted to try SL in the Rift." As for performance, he's using a super-charged PC to get this footage: "I have a pretty high-end computer, but if you can run the game normally on 60 FPS you should be able to play in Oculus Rift mode smoothly." You need a fricking Ferrari of PCs to run Second Life at 60 frames per second, which makes me think Vidyadude is a hardcore gamer. Which further makes me think I'm right to think Oculus Rift will increase interest in Second Life beyond its core userbase.
