Watch This Weekend: "Superman-California Dream", a Surreal Short Movie About Online Identity
Love of Sun is a non-profit online exhibit I was very proud to help develop while living in Beijing last Summer, a collection of videos and photos depicting China as seen by four California artists -- and California as seen by four Chinese artists. This entry, a lonely and whimsical short movie by rising Chinese artist Chen Zhou, is among my favorites, and touches on a lot of themes I write about on New World Notes:
Weixin profiles depict their owners as anime cartoons, or grandiose avatars drawn from online roleplaying games that are also very popular in China, much of them inspired by Western comics and fantasy novels... Much like Chen Zhou’s cosplayer, roleplaying an American superhero in his comically bespoke outfit, hundreds of millions of Chinese invest enormous personal and emotional energy in their pseudonymous online identities, disguising their everyday selves in outlandish personae, pouring into them emotional and socio-political longings that are largely forbidden in offline China.
I hope you read the rest here, and see the rest of Love of Sun here. Also check out this interview with Chen Zhou by Honora Shea... who as it happens, I first met in Second Life, when she was managing Cao Fei's RMB City project in SL.
