A lot of backstage manuevering went into posing Cory Doctorow and Lawrence Lessig's avatars for the screenshots in last week's post requesting designers for the Creative Commons HQ in SL. Professor Lessig's assistant Elaine gamely helped manuever his persona into position, while the part of Doctorow was played by me, using my archived copy of his avatar from his last time in-world.
Toward the end, Linden Lab staffer Bub Linden showed up to check on our progress. Which would be unremarkable, except that Bub is a zombie with a flamethrower and a penchant for script-enabled slapstick. So where Bub goes, hijinx follow (after the break)...
Friendship gesture declined by fire.
Consumed by flame while an indifferent law professor looks on.
A hurling two-foot attack countered by a Neo-worthy dodge.
Dodge fails. World-renowned novelist and blogger thus undone.
I checked with Cory Doctorow if I could run these screenshots, for after all, thanks to search engine aggregation, they're now liable to pop up when someone goes Googling for "Cory Doctorow" images, and who could blame him if he didn't want his name associated with his animated likeness getting pwned by the undead in a most undignified fashion?
Because of this, I might point out how it's one more example of how virtual identity is beginning to merge with the real. I suppose I could even do some freeform speculation about a new ethics for treating the online world personae of real world public personalities.
But you know, sometimes a zombie farting on Cory Doctorow's avatar is just a zombie farting on Cory Doctorow's avatar.
