Writing for the SL Herald, Prokofy Neva (yes, that Prokofy) proposes a rather brilliant methodology for tracking what places in the world are truly popular and valued by Residents. Not the current raw foot traffic metric that Linden Lab uses in its list of Popular Places, but places listed in the User Profile Picks tab. Perhaps unsurprisingly, only seven of the 20 most Popular Places (by foot traffic) and most popular User Profile Picks overlap. Essentially, it's a kind of Second Life folksonomy, one that could be very useful once landowner Traffic Incentives are ended in June.

I have two main problems with basing it on picks.
1. Land changes owners and purposes. Once that happens, the pick reverts to the new landower/land use.
2. Picks can be held by anyone, including inactive residents. I have some friends who haven't been in-world for almost a year now and have active picks. Most of these are not for the current use of the land.
For this to be even slightly more effective than the current system, it would have to have some cutoff date for "active" users, and use only their picks. Even with that, I don't see this as a large improvement over the current system.
