If you're a longtime NWN reader who happens to also read PC Gamer UK, you may have noticed an article in their June 2006 issue that seemed vagued familiar. "Starting a Second Life" by Tom Francis, mainly the story of a wounded US commando who transformed himself into an SL casino tycoon, drew heavily from my April 2004 profile of Jason Foo, "Post-War Reconstruction", and a brief follow-up a few months later. Tom actually contacted me a few months ago, interested in writing a story for the magazine based on these posts and using some screenshots from NWN, but somewhere between his reporting and the article's publication, credits and quote attributions to New World Notes were left out of final copy. Since the magazine's sold primarily in Britain, I only discovered this after a couple Residents noticed the issue on the stands and pointed it out in the SL Forum, then linked to scans of the article in Flickr (here and here).
Fortunately I was able to sort it out with Tom, who was apologetic, and Ross Atherton, Acting Editor of PC Gamer UK, who just e-mailed me: "I'm really sorry we didn't credit you for the help and the screenshots you provided for our 'Making a Second Living' article in PC Gamer UK. It was an honest mistake and we're looking forward to rectifying that in a follow-up article soon." I'm looking forward to that myself. Meanwhile, here's my own recent update to Games Prototype, the casino tycoon formerly known as Jason Foo: "Adapt, Improvise, Oversit."
Big thanks to Jim Bunderfeld and nimrod Yaffle for offering yet another demonstration of the SL community's internationalism in action.
Not the first time this has happened.
Gotta give Jamlet da credz! :o)
