Entirely without my intention, last week's New World Notes was a whirlwind of mixed reality events, with well-known personalities in arts and letters taking on avatar form, and taking their names with them:
- Suzanne Vega and the future of live music in the metaverse. Shortly after posting my YouTube videos of the event, the abler hands of Tao Takashi and Robbie Dingo uploaded their versions-- here and here, respectively. (Tao's cut is the full appearance.)
- Julian Dibbell discusses Play Money in Second Life. During our conversation, Julian wondered if virtual books could ever be commercially and practically viable. Unbeknownst to him, a staffer with Amazon.com who's been experimenting with SL (albeit in an unofficial capacity) was in his audience, and perceived that potential. His blog entry on that here.
- The avatar shell of Kurt Vonnegut spotted, excelsior!
