Tateru Nino-- mother of all Mentors, witty cartoonist, and SL's warmly beating heart-- also happens to have a fine head for demographic projections. Her latest crunching of numbers yields an extraordinary figure:
At current growth rates conservatively extrapolated, by early December, Second Life will have over a million registered Residents. Less conservatively, by mid November.
Caveating the existence of alt accounts and inactive Residents, she notes, "What does matter is the psychological value of the relatively arbitrary number. Not necessarily to you. Not necessarily to me." See Tateru's charts and graphs and other thoughts here. Her money's on a million between mid to late November. I.E., around Thanksgiving.
Tat should open a casino inworld. Oh wait, that's not good for me, I have a gambling addiction. *murmurs*

I'm relatively immune to the gambling bug.
I don't like to lose. Actually, to be honest, I don't much relish winning, either, now that I come to think about it.
