This is what the world is like, from my office in Waterhead (direct portal here). On my rooftop, there's a shrine to Snowcrash, an "Atlas sheep" sculpture created and given to me by Tateru Nino, and an artificial cannabis plant from Robbie Dingo that I need to water every day, or it turns brown. Someone secretly installed a giant hamster wheel in my building, and though I'm not sure who, I often run on it, while I'm sending out IMs. As with most areas of the main continents, my neighbors have a cheerfully chaotic variety of domiciles. My neighbor Pathfinder Linden is over there in the four domes he calls home, while off to the other side, another Linden lives in a red high heel shoe.
But where do you live? Over the next few months (shamelessly cribbing from Andrew Sullivan) I'll be running the best screenshots of homes and hangouts from across the metaverse, a compendium of Second Life postcards from New World Notes readers, in all their variety of styles and locales.
Guidelines and suggestions for submitting your view of the world after the break.
Submitting to New World Notes' "World from My Window"
- E-mail me 1-5 .jpegs or .gif screenshots. Higher resolution preferred, but must not be larger than 1 megabytes total!
- Be sure to put "World from My Window" and your Resident name in the subject line/body, for credit.
- If you'd like visitors, include a SLURL, or at least the name of the sim, and when available, the property name.
- Write a short description of your home or hangout. What are the landmarks? What do you like about it? Share a story from your days of living there.
- Screenshots of public Linden-owned spaces, such as sandboxes, are fine to submit.
- Location may be taken from a regular hangout area that is not your home. If you don't own the property, be sure to get their permission. (By submitting a screenshot, I'll assume you have.)
- Yes, Teen Grid submissions are encouraged-- just make sure to designate them as such.
Update, 10/17: Instead of screenshots, you can also submit machinima that fits the criterion here, via a video link to established sites like YouTube, Blip.TV, etc. (Thanks for the suggestion, Moo Money!)
Style Guidelines/Advice
- Higher quality the screenshot, the better. Turn up your graphics features, and select 1600x1200 as a resolution size. Play with forcing Sunset or Sunrise, for dramatic lighting. Since it cuts down fog and occlusion, increasing draw distance often makes a screenshot look less realistic. Absolutely no Photoshopping or other post-production alteration, please.
- Be sure to remove the interface from the screenshot.
- Consider placing one or more avatars in the foreground, to add interest and proportional reference.
- Emphasis is on diversity of areas and locales. Unless they're distinct from each other, for example, I'll probably not run more than a handful of medieval castles.
- Commercial locations OK, but blatant promotion not recommended.
Update, 6/11: Expanded submission limit.
You won't believe it, but I just stumbled across your office by pure chance. I was visiting Brent Linden's place and saw that magnificent temple and the art exhibition. Then I turned - and saw the place I just read about in the blog...
Regarding the hamster wheel - you HAVE seen the graffity in the lower floor?

Thanks for stopping by! I need to have more regular events there. Trouble is, it's in a PG sim amid all those judgemental Lindens. ;)
Which graffiti, "Torrid was here"?

That's the one.

I don't see the hamster wheel there anymore, altho I must say that's a really healthy-looking pot plant.
What a great idea, I'm looking forward to seeing where all the entrants live. Especially if there are other dumpster-dwellers out there...

Machinima that fits the criterion?
(a) "Criteria" surely
(b) surely not less than 1 meg?
