Regular readers will recall that I recently announced an Interface HUD Expo... a contest that was promptly overshadowed by Cory Linden's plans to open source the viewer and integrate user-created interface changes into new versions of SL. So in the next few weeks, I'll launch an Open Interface Expo, inviting Residents to show off their tweaks and hacks here.
Meantime, I received at least two very cool HUD entries that are worth a look and perhaps some use. Lord knows when or if a variation of their functionality will be implemented into the viewer, so have a look, and consider making them part of your in-world experience for the forseeable future.
HUD name: Bijorewind 2
Creator: Yumi Murakami
Type: Veteran User HUD
Description: "A history browser
and navigation aid for SL. Automatically lists the last 50 places
you've visited, and lets you jump back instantly to any one. Also
stores 50 favourite locations selected by you, freely copyable or
addable with a single click, and integrates the BijoPicks guide, soon
to show some of the best places in SL. The HUD is designed to be
compact when not in use, to dock below the level of the SL window,
and to resemble a familiar interface for the user when deployed."

HUD name: Koshin Teleport HUD
Creator: Aster Lardner
Type: Veteran User HUD
Description: "The basic Idea behind this HUD was to create a landmark system with a circular menu similar to the menus found in the 'Secret of Mana' video games. It's something I've been working on out of frustration with the GUI since I started SecondLife. I use it myself and I often give it to newbies who seem to get the hand of it rather quickly.
"Basically it features a loop of ninteen or so location icons you can rotate in and out of view. I often find myself warping between two or three places and this tool helps me keep a pallet of about seven locations on screen. I tried to make it very easy to add and remove locations based on touch and avoided note cards and landmark readers.
"For advanced users you can toggle the text on/off for the center menu buttons or the location buttons. The compass icon toggles the HUD visible or not—reducing it to a semi-transparent compass icon when hidden. The menu Icons in the center can be changed via an options menu accessible from the star button.
Koshin Teleport HUD in action...
"There are different modes that the HUD can be switched to on touch which are located in the middle row and light up when activated. Each mode determines what happens when you touch a location icon. The more obvious are Add, rename, delete, and teleport (Set Map Destination).
"In SLURL mode, touching a location opens up an extended menu for creating SLURL links of various forms (HTML, VB Code, and Media Wiki) as well as ways to export the SLURL to third party services (Like Google Bookmarks, del.icio.us, and reddit). To share locations quickly there is a simple say mode that says in chat the location's secondlife://Region/X/Y/Z link which the client now recognizes in chat.
"Finally, there is an icon change mode that opens a menu to set textures from the HUD's inventory or note cards sets."
Where to get it: "There are two versions. The free version inserts my referral code in the SLURLs generated, but $199 Linden version does not. You can find either version in my Web 2.0 Store." [Direct teleport at link]
I recently made a few upgrades to the HUD since the last time we talked and stopped giving away the free HUDs. ^_^; I figured it would be better just to maintain one version. You can still get it for $L199, though.

What I need is a HUD HUD. Seriously. Like many people I know, I don't have enough slots on screen for all the HUDs I'd like to have available. It would be great if I could select pre-set selections of HUDs through a HUD!

Another item for the competition might be Max Case's work. Aside from the useful but troubled Babbler and deBabbler, Registrator-Tron collects information about simulator hardware as it is worn by residents in the course of their SL travels. The data is collected and offered back through the tool and on the web at: http://neighbours.maxcase.info/ This is the only source I know of to get updated information about simulator hardware neighbours; I am pretty sure Linden Labs does not release such information publically at the moment.

We just released a bookmarking HUD that may be of your interest.
You can find it in-world at our offices: secondlife://Brannon/150/200/22
And a web-side view here: http://www.sloog.org
Cheers! ;)
