I've been enjoying the conversation in my Martin Luther King Jr. Day Open Forum on race in Second Life, but an anonymous Comment in particular caught my eye. It reminded me of a few things said by Eboni Khan, in my profile of her a couple years back-- with some interesting variations. So much so, an excerpt deserves highlighting:
I am a black female in Second Life and in real life. I rarely see other black avatars. My avatar looks a lot like me, big booty and all. I get a lot of attention,
especially from French males. I have been treated rudely by white
female avatars. Most of the friends I have made that appear as white avatars
are black in real life, just as a lot of the white women avatars are
really black men in real life. I guess you never know... and I guess it
doesnt matter.
One day, I walked around in one of my white skins and it just felt unnatural to me, so I changed back. Second Life allows you to totally express your inner self. My blackness is within me, so I choose to be what I really am.
