... is a mind-bending, SL-to-RL art installation proposal, developed by folks affiliated with MIT's famed Media Lab, and intended for the SIGGRAPH gallery. I talked with Sousreality developer Zetetic Aubret a few weeks ago, to explain a bit more about it.
"What the page describes," he tells me, "is just a mockup of a concept. We haven't actually implemented it yet. We're waiting to hear back from SIGGRAPH to see if it'll be accepted to their art gallery before we start working on it. Though, given the reception we've gotten so far, we'll probably build it no matter what.
"The mockup that you see in the video is on some land that Pathfinder Linden is loaning MIT for a little while in Ruthenium... It's all very rough, though-- people around the lab are mostly just getting their feet wet in SL, trying to figure out what is interesting about it from an academic/institutional perspective."
Whatever happens with SIGGRAPH, I for one hope they go on to build it.
This is a fantastic use of SL. I sure hop ethey build it as well. Reminds me of the much hyped, short lived Tholos project. A company in Europe was going to build kiosks in pairs, one in say, London and the matching pair in Paris. You would see a real time video link up between the 2 places. Wished it could've been built.
