The game culture of Second Life has overwhelmed my ability to fully cover alone-- well, that became true in 2004-- so I'm happy (and not a little relieved) to bring on Onder Skall as NWN's regular game correspondent. I'll still be writing about gaming when I can, of course, but for now, if you're developing an SL game or just enjoy one that deserves his attention, Onder is your go-to avatar.
His first installment for New World Notes should run next week. Meantime, contact information and more on how Onder made SL gaming his niche after the break.
"I came to SL because I'm an avid gamer, and it seemed to represent the ultimate play space. We could build our own games, and hang out with the creators of our favorite ones. How much cooler can you get?
"Still, it took me a long time to become a Resident. I first registered an account some time ago and uninstalled after getting completely lost and bored. A year later I tried again, got stuck on something, then kicked out, and I uninstalled. Another year later I tried again, wandered aimlessly, got kicked out when the sim restarted, and my mouse hovered over 'Uninstall' for a full five seconds before I decided to take one more crack at it. It was at that point that I discovered Nexus Prime, and figured I'd give Second Life one more day.
"That was quite some time ago. Since then I co-founded Second Life Games (which soon after became a solo production), write freelance here and there for the Herald, and generally spend all of my time cataloguing where to find good times. After abandoning the world twice, and then suddenly finding myself in love with it, I found for myself a holy mission: give people looking for fun info on fun things to do.
"I continue to be surprised at how little anybody seems to be paying attention to that idea.
"I can be contacted through email ([email protected]), through my website, or IM in world. Lately I've been hanging around my place in Patagonia installing a never-ending rotation of games I can't keep my hands off of."
w00t Hamlet and Onder join forces!
Happy to see this happen.
