Rik Riel's weekly round-up of upcoming SL events...

Among the many arts-related activities in SL, you''ll find that there's a vital and diverse poetry scene. From open mic nights to workshops to "poetry tag", you can find a wide range of verse to tickle your muse.  On Friday, June 1, at 6pm, there's a release party for the publication of The Absence of Shadows, an anthology of 24 poems written by 14 SL poets, edited by Phorkyad Acropolis. At Bhima (129, 239).

I asked Phorkyad how he ended up creating a poetry anthology. "I began attending poetry readings in various venues, he explained. "After a few visits, I began reading my own poems, realizing perhaps that I could be a poet in this brave new—and virtual—world. Impressed by the work of some of the virtual poets, I decided to publish a poetry anthology 'in-world.' I did it not just to expose poetry to a wider SL audience, or to bring the world of SL poetry to RL, but also to investigate the technical aspects of virtual publishing."  Come hear Phorkyad and other SL poets read on Friday.

6PM - Acoustic Folk by Grace McDonnough
Eclectic folk musician Grace McDunnough performs on acoustic guitar at the Freudian Slip at Seven Veils (20, 19).

6PM - Reading by Fantasy Author George R.R. Martin
Fantasy author George RR Martin reads from his novel, Dreamsongs: Volume 1 at the Bantam Dell Bookshop (teleport SLURL). The event will be simulcast in several other sims listed here.

7PM - Artmaking Class
Kate Proudhon offers instruction on the basics to prim and texture creation, modifying, and linking from an artist's perspective. At Nanea Isle (46, 201).

5AM - Philips Design launches their Co-creation Experience in SecondLife
Philips Design opens their Co-creation Experience, to explore new ways to collaborate and engage with  residents. Visitors can participate in "collaborative activities aimed at further understanding people’s motivations and desired experiences in virtual immersive environments." Oh, and get free Philips swag along the way. In Virtual Holland (teleport SLURL).

12PM - Techie Talk KoffeeKlatch with Dr. Dobb's
Information Week and Dr. Dobb's Journal invite geeks and techies to an informal chat over coffee at Dr Dobbs Island (11, 245). 

6PM - Introduction to Textures
Lady Deledda helps you find life after plywood.  Learn how to apply, scale, and manipulate textures. At  Hamnida (237, 83).

7PM - Poetry Tag
Ego Essex hosts an informal poetry gathering at Oneko Murasaki's Teahouse in Chongno (208, 130). All level of writers welcome to join in the word games and conversation.

Mel Cheeky

12PM - 2AM - 12 Hour Live Music Extravaganza for SL Relay for Life
RFL Team Eros presents twelve hours of live music concerts with all proceeds going toward the SL Relay for Life. Performers include Dann Numbers, Mel Cheeky, Smiley Rainmaker, Dreams Lightcloud, Mankind Tracer, Tempest Jewel, JueL Resistance, and Nico Anubis. Free prizes, raffles, and more at Eros Promenade (233, 219).

3PM - Surfing Class
Come by Crab Island (135, 144) for a free class on the art of SL surfing. Includes a complimentary surfboard. Gnarly.

3:30PM - Class on Sculpted Prims
What are these mysterious sculpted prims?  Elbow Voom teaches what a "sculptie" is, how they are created, and how you can get started creating your very own sculptured prims (without losing your shirt on expensive 3D modelling software). At disturbing world (159, 79). 

6PM  - Postcards from Second Life Book Signing
Amy Freelunch is signing copies of her new art book entitled Postcards from Second Life at the Pooley Auditorium (teleport SLURL).  The book features a set of watercolors that document the artist's travels inside SL. Postcards will be complimentary at that time, and will available for purchase after the signing at Bergman Books in Nemesis (teleport SLURL).

Hi Fis of the 90s

9AM - "Lo Fi" Art and "Hi Fi" Music Release Party
"Geeky" paintings by Hari Kamachi and Pinson Shan presented alongside the release party for the Hi-Fi's Of The 90's electronica EP "Hard On". At the Jojko Gallery at Howelsen (70, 229).

5PM - Class on "Inter-Object Communications"
Aryn Lassard teaches an intermediate level scripting class exploring scripted chat, using hands on examples that show you the various ways in which objects can communicate with each other and with Avatars. At Dream City (231, 193).

7:30PM - Mermaid Pageant
If you missed the launch of Club Siren a couple of weeks ago, you can find all the merfolks you can shake a trident at during the Mermaid Pageant in Shamrock (Teleport SLURL).

7PM - Buddhist Meditation
Come to the Sky Sangha for a gathering of the Skeptical Buddhists' meditation group. The session will begin with a discussion of buddhist meditation practices, then a group meditation session. At Toowoomba (132, 235).

7AM - "Talking the Talk" Roundtable Discussion on US Politics
The Creative Coalition, a non-partisan entertainment industry advocacy organization, is broadcasting in-world a discussion on US presidential politics with several prominent pundits, activists, and bloggers. At InWorld Studios Island (teleport SLURL).
