In the underbelly of Gibson, the SL city Gibson inspired
In the beginning of August, the man who gave "cyberspace" its name and its imaginative texture will visit the place that probably wouldn't exist, without him. As it happens, one of Second Life's very first regions is named in honor of William Gibson. Tyrell Corporation, one of SL's first groups, gave the place that title, then proceeded to build Nexus Prime, an ever-changing city with gleaming spires above, and mean, untamed warrens below, on top of it. An ideal tribute to the author's work, when you think about it, so I hope Gibson visits Gibson.
Details on his visit and all the attendant celebration at Gibson's publisher's blog.
Update, July 10: The appearance is slated for August 2. To attend, IM Jeremy Neumann or join the SL group "Penguin Readers".
Hat tip: SLOG.
I definitely hope he visits Gibson too... Neuromancer was one of the books that inspired my entry into Second Life (historically: http://torley.com/of-ears-and-technocultural-differences-on-a-real-train ), and I stumbled in looking for cyberpunk locations. While Gibson's oeuvre has moved away from grimy antiheroes and skies the color of television tuned to a dead channel, I salute his influence, his words that led to many actions.

I was, uh, a little less charitable about the news:
