The man with the mohawk made of fire is back. Last weekend, someone surreptitiously slipped me a landmark to Crimson Shadows, a new-- and apparently, still not officially unveiled-- region on the Rezzables continent, also home to the beloved Greenies.
When I teleported there on a whim, my mouth went agape. And then when I checked who'd created the place, it went even wider: Jimmy Thomson, a legendary builder, was its main creator. With Crimson Shadows he's built a goth and vampire's paradise full of darkly gorgeous details and atmospheric effects, and to my knowledge, did so while totally beneath the radar of everyone who's admired him in the last few years.
I first met Jimmy while still a Linden, and when I first mentioned him during a visit to the office, a mass of Lindens converged around a workstation, to coo over his Field of Dreams. Click that link, and check the date; even back in 2004, Jimmy was already doing professional builds with a flair that few had matched in those early times.

More creations followed, largely under the direction of Foxy Xevious, another legendary figure from SL's early years: a sim-wide haunted house, and a first-person shooter with two staggeringly beautiful maps. All these raised the bar on what was possible in Second Life, and encouraged other creators to reach those heights as well. I assumed he was a level designer in the game industry who did this stuff in his off-hours for fun, but he told me that wasn't the case at all: he was just a computer programmer who worked on Canadian shipping logistics, of all things, and only with Second Life, had discovered his true vocation. And very quickly, he was doing just that, creating SL content on a professional basis.
I haven't seen much from him in the last couple years, except as a set builder for the Linden-produced machinima Silver Bells and Golden Spurs. In any case, he's back in full force with Crimson Shadows, your destination for casual get-togethers in the glinting darkness and a blood-red glow.
