Rik Riel's weekly round-up of upcoming SL events...
Known for their very successful in-world fundraisers, the American Cancer Society is finally opening a permanent presence in Second Life this Sunday, September 23 (Teleport SLURL). There will be an official dedication ceremony and celebration beginning at 12 noon PST with opening speeches by representatives of the ACS, the SL Relay for Life, and cancer survivors, followed by tours of the sim, readings, a fashion show, and live music by FinalSago Sodwind, Kim Seifert and Silas Scarborough.
Yesterday I ran into a couple of the main organizers, Synergy Devonshire and Poppy Zabelin. They told me that the center plans to host support group meetings, educational resources and a buddy network for cancer survivors and caregivers. “The Survivors group in Second Life has more than doubled in size in
just three months," said Poppy Zabelin. "And it is still growing as more and more people are
discovering the possibilities that Second Life can offer of connecting
with fellow travelers on their cancer journey.”
In related events, Project PCOS, dedicated to aiding women with polycystic ovary syndrome, opens its doors on Sunday with a gala blacktie fundraiser.
Also coming up this week: the SL Ballet opens a window, triathletes race ecologically, a special day for bisexuals, Bollywood hits the catwalk, leaves are illuminated, and racecars play tag. All that and so much more after the fold...
