According to this recent business report that's flickered through the metaverse blogosphere, the Lindens have set up a Second Life office in Beijing. According to the Lindens, that's not true. Or maybe it is. I asked their PR rep if that was the case, and this is the full official Linden reply he sent back last night:
Like all evolving companies, we’re constantly evaluating new markets and opportunities. Second Life already has a vibrant and fast-growing international user base, with Residents from more than 100 countries around the world. So, it makes sense for us to consider a potential presence in China, along with other markets where there is a high broadband penetration and active Internet user base. While there’s nothing more we can confirm at the moment, we’ll be sure to update on those plans in due course.
My translation? Yes, we've set up an exploratory presence office in China but we haven't established anything official, as yet. Other interpretations, of course, will vary.
How long will it take for LL to roll over and rat out its chinese residents like all the others that have gone to china?

I was wondering the same thing -- is LL going to have to sell its soul to officially do business in China? That would be extremely disappointing.
