Brainchild of JS Vavoom, in real life a college instructor on the subject, the Nursing Education Simulator reproduces aspects of the occupation in SL, including this emergency room scenario in which patient ECG rhythm, blood pressure, and other information is conveyed in a Heads Up Display, while treatment info (IV administration, oxygen rate, etc.) is displayed in another. While it's difficult to see this supplanting hands-on instruction (at least in the near future), it's easy to imagine how this could be an effective introductory resource, especially for students and teachers in geographically remote locations. In that regard, this aspect from Vavoom's documentation caught my eye, because it suggests how some of the human subtleties of nursing work might be taught this way, too:
With the two HUDs controlling the simulation, it becomes possible to have roleplay as well. All chat and actions can/are recorded for review and study.
All this is reported by Topher Zwiers of MUVE Forward, a really good blog covering educational applications of SL. His report on NESIM is here and here.
