Based in South Africa, Virtual Africa is a project from Uthango, an NGO that seeks to become "a gateway for Africans into virtual worlds, and specifically into Second Life, as a starting point"-- evidently, the first of its kind for the continent. (Their SL office is based in Sunset Commerce-- direct SLURL teleport at this link.) Last week, Uthango announced a donation of L$100,000 (nearly $400) from the City-State of Extropia, a self-governed society based in Second Life. And yes, Uthango addresses the question, "‘[A]re you not better off in the real world addressing poverty?" As they point out in an earlier post, Africans are actually on the cutting edge of using mobile phone minutes as a kind of virtual currency-- suggesting that the use of Linden Dollars and other virtual world money might also be feasible and beneficial there. I'd just like to clarify that the credit for Extropia's donation doesn't belong to the management of Extropia.
Thanks go to the Citizens and friends of Extropia for their incredible generosity, and to DJs Vannesh Cannoli, Seven Shikami, Nicki Petrichor and Alexander Burgess, and singer/songwriter Grace McDunnough, for their amazing talents.
It was the community of Extropia, together, who came out to support Virtual Africa at our Solstice Party, to have some fun and do some good!
