Like most Residents, SL blogger Garth Goode hasn't been impressed with many real world marketing sites in Second Life. Until, that is, he came across the island for EU telecom Orange, a community-centric project that gives away free land to Resident developers and features this striking innovation, a Music Cloud:
Walk through a named box and a tone or rhythm will become more and more audible. Leave the box and the sound fades away. Now imagine a group of people walking through these boxes at once. What’s merely interesting as an individual has fascinating possibilities with a group.
He's still skeptical Orange Island can generate substantial community engagement, especially because the place was empty when he visited. Judging by his review, however, it's not for lack of trying.
This is a great installation, and really encouraging to see companies within SL embracing the possibilites of use of sound and music within their builds.
Another great series of installations in this vein are on Adam Ramona / Adam Nash's "Ramonia" here :

definitely worth checking out! It's great stuff.
The potential for group controlled non linear generative soundtracks in SL is so immense, I really hope we see more.
