Located one train stop across the water from Manhattan, the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg is probably the world's epicenter of indy art coolness. (Consequently, longtime residents are bound to disagree with that statement by retorting, "It used to be cool until...") Thanks to Brooklynites associated with The Electric Sheep Company, it's also been an East Coast epicenter for the metaverse. Now thanks to an artist known in SL as Jay Van Buren, there's a portal between both worlds: starting March 1 and running for a year, a Williamsburg art gallery will host Brooklyn is Watching, an interactive, patron-controlled trip into Second Life:
An avatar, in the shape of an eyeball and under the name Monet Destiny will view and project [SL]...onto a large screen monitor at the Real Life gallery.
Bettina Tizzy (who else?) has the scoop and an interview with Van Buren, who has some interesting thoughts on SL as an artist's medium. Hope I can stop by next time I'm in New York. Read about it all here.
