Welcome to the inaugural edition of Lanna’s List, Charlanna Beresford’s weekly round-up of upcoming SL events…
If you read Hamlet's recent chronicle of Uthango's efforts to fight poverty in Africa and thought you'd like to learn more about the cause, come to the first annual Africa Day in Second Life on Thursday, April 24. To help Second Life residents better understand the opportunities and challenges related to Africa's access to – and presence in – virtual worlds, the organizers have put together a very full day of events that include art, performances, lectures and a party. The day's events begin at 10AM with a slide show of African Art in SL and primarily take place on Orange Island (click here to teleport) and culminate with a party hosted at 4:30 PM by DJ Doubledown at the brand-new club African Rain on Robben Island (click here to teleport).
Also this week: SL Book Fair, Star Trek whale watching, and The Wizard of OS. All that and more after the jump...

3:30 PM – Thinkers:
Bebop Reality
Join the discussion on Bebop Reality; it is a term coined by
Hamlet Au and it refers to "the plastic, improvisational nature of SL,
where people can riff off each other's creativity. That's how we can get
mermaids and robots and so on in the same social space and not have it seem discordant".
But does it take a special mind to accept this mix of the normal and the
surreal? If so, does it actually have an adverse effect on recruiting
residents? In Support for Healing (click here to

SUBMITTING EVENTS FOR COVERAGE IN New World Notes
Every Thursday morning, NWN highlights events for the upcoming weekend into next Wednesday. If you'd like an event to be considered, send the description and event link to Charlanna Beresford via IM or e-mail her at [email protected]. You can also contact Lanna through her Facebook profile, where she's listed as "Charlanna Beresford".
Main guidelines:
1 - Events for the coming week must be received by
Tuesday Noon SLT.
2 - Include all the relevant info-- day, time, and especially the SLURL to the event location.
3 - Please send related graphics such as screenshots or photo of the event site, if available.
4 - Events with artistic, cultural, scientific, political, creative, and/or educational value preferred.
5 - Events sponsored or promoted by real world corporations are welcome, as long they serve and entertain the Second Life community, and/or foster Resident-made content (live music, builds, scripting, fashion, games, etc.) Events that merely promote the company or organization's Second Life presence are not generally appropriate; you may instead consider advertising your event or service on New World Notes.
6 - Mature-rated events are permissible, but listing descriptions should be PG-13. Political and religious events are encouraged, though those of an extreme or non-inclusive variety are rarely included.
7 - Bonus consideration given to game-related or machinima events, and for events with "I've never seen that in SL before" value.
Lanna! Congratulations on a terrific debut - this is a wonderful, intriguing, eclectic group of recommendations.
You're off to a stellar start!
