While preparing my analysis of readers' first hour in Second Life last week, I stopped by the Welcome Area, which is the place where most new Residents get their first glimpse of SL in its raw form. It was as it often is a surreal menagerie of avatars-- robots, supermodels, a monkey with a guitar, warriors from the future, and quietly standing there, a Resident named Jimmyjunk Augenblick, who'd made himself into an astoundingly high-fidelity recreation of The Joker from the Batman franchise's latest installment as played by the late Heath Ledger. Augenblick told me he'd made it by uploading a photo of Ledger into GIMP, then converting that into a skin. I observed that it was a particularly dark incarnation, what with the actor's untimely demise, and Jimmyjunk smiled and agreed.
