This is a pretty cool mixed reality innovation: SLARiPS, for Second Life Augmented Reality in Physical Space, an installation created by interactive artist Julian Stadon, currently on display at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth, Australia. You wear a headset mounted with a webcam, and the video from that is merged with video taken from Second Life-- the result is an avatar that seems to appear on the palm of your hand. I'm not quite clear how the process works beyond that, or why the avatar in this demo video begins to break up after several iterations-- I've messaged Stadon, to find out more-- but it's easy to envision numerous practical applications for exporting elements of the virtual world this way. (It's a more hands-on variation of this augmented reality system from a couple folks at Georgia Tech.) The video, by the way, was created by librarian Kathryn Greenhill, who has comments and insights on her blog.
