While certain SLers were busy boarding planes to Tampa last week, others were in LA getting down to business at the 2008 Virtual Worlds Expo. A substantial number of companies' booths were in some way related to SL, and that's not including the Lindens' own house-sized exhibit, which dominated the floor. I was there to moderate a panel which featured Vollee's neat mobile for Second Life app, and sign some books. Among the many visitors to my table were several multimedia artists, numerous educators, a few business execs, a number of lawyers, a filmmaker or two, a slew of metaverse developers, members of the US State Department, and the CEO of a virtual world start-up based in Istanbul, Turkey. When I remembered to unholster my camera, I took some photos of other folks who passed through my orbit, which only hints at the overall diversity of professionals working in Second Life:
Starting from left: IBM metaverse evangelist Ian Hughes/Epredator Potato showing off his Virtual Worlds Innovation Award, which he won for promoting the metaverse for IBM; MissWhimsical Magic, who's a legal intern working on IP issues in Second Life; Benjamin Noble/Duranske, author of Virtual Law: Navigating the Legal Landscape of Virtual Worlds, and Maud Cahuzac/Horizon Delphis, a research engineer for French telecom Orange, which has a substantial presence in SL.
More Second Life items from VWC-LA to come...
