Since May 2006 Sasun Steinbeck has been compiling directories of art and photography galleries in Second Life with an automated kiosk system, handily annotated with a teleport link. In her latest update, that list now includes 428 art galleries and 88 photography galleries. For SL's 500,000 or so active users, that represents roughly 1 gallery per 500 Residents. By way of (inexact) comparison, San Francisco's population is currently 764,000, and this directory of SF art/photo galleries taps out at around 100. Image: sl-artgalleries.blogspot.com

That is just awesome. Great article!

That's a nice ratio, though not surprising. SL is art-friendly environment, running a gallery is fun job (and dream of many of us) and getting space for the gallery is a bit cheaper than in S.F.

Number of art galleries in Second Life: 428.
Number of art galleries in Second Life that do not contain some form of wish-fufillment "erotic avatar art": 4.

Hehe, nice observation, though not quite true. There are lot of galleries with quality stuff iSL. Problem is that there are so much "erotic avatar wish-fulfillment art" and even more "grab Rembrandt from web and stick texture on a prim for 10L$" galleries.
BTW, I'll reopen my gallery :)

Thanks for the article! It's all about making it easy for residents to find all the cool art galleries/installations in SL, and there are a LOT. I also created a gallery tour HUD that you can get by clicking my kiosk located at any of the galleries on the list.
BTW you published some non-existant links in the article above. The only one you need to have is the link to the list at http://sl-artgalleries.blogspot.com. Enjoy!
