An SL blogger named Alf Eaton recently used the Mappa Novus service to generate giant, 13 meg size images of the Second Life grid, which has far exceeded the viewer's dynamic map. Get them at this link. Above, Osprey Therian's mark-up of the map, showing the area of SL that existed when she joined in 2004. Great way of getting a sense of the world's growth. Hat tip: Shiny Life.

Too bad Alf's website is broken. Perhaps someone could convince him to put the files elsewhere on a system that doesn't stop responding.

This is great! I've been thinking about how to introduce SL in presentations at conferences, etc. I like the historical/cultural approach. Starting from a big-picture map (including the annotation of how much it has grown is fab) and then working out to a sim or region gives a sense of "place" to it. Then you can talk about one or a few sims and the nature of how we avatars interact with the world and the people in it, our projects, etc.
Thanks for this!

It would be most interesting to see versions of this map as of January 2009 and just after July 2009 to compare and see if there is a noticeable difference.

I mean... because of the OpenSpace transition.

OUTSTANDING!! This is great...and to try and avoid being flamed!! A zoom in feature would be cool. But, I can't even fathom that possibility. :)

Well Salazar, I used good old fashioned screen grab technology to capture a view of the grid on Xmas day 2008 - that could serve as your before shot:
