Chestnut's Choices 2/26 - 3/4: International Machinima Fest, Hobo Block Party, Virtual Shakespeare and much more

Chestnut Rau’s weekly round-up of upcoming SL events…

When Chantal Harvey and Ze Moo (above) started to plan a Festival to celebrate machinima they did not anticipate what would happen.  What started as a chance to meet people with a shared interest blossomed into a huge mixed reality event, MaMachinima International Festival 2009.  On Saturday February 28th beginning at 1PM a festival of machinima from more than 50 talented artists will be shown. After each machinima, the creators will talk about the making of the film and will answer questions from the SL crowd.  Concurrently, the Festival will be shown at PLANETART in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Dutch audience will also be encouraged to ask questions during this mixed reality celebration of art. 

Expect machinima from Chantal Harvey, Dizzy Banjo, Toxic Menges, and many many others.  The Festival is not limited to machinima from Second Life so you may see work from World of Warcraft, Sims, or even Grand Theft Auto.  Go to http://mmif.org/ for more information including a short promotional machinima by CodeWarrior Carling can also be found here. Friday 2/27

11:15AM – Start of Weekend Long Hobo Block Party

Orhalla Zander and Rocket Sellers have put together a weekend-long party to celebrate the partnership between Hobo Island and Rezzable.  Live music, talent shows, and comedy will take place on the streets and sidewalks and in the Vagabond Royale Theater.  Musicians from Von Johin, Hayduke Schnook, Jaynine Scarborough and EvaMoon Ember and others, to my favorite comedydiva Lauren Weyland will perform.

3PM – How to Communicate with People with Hearing Loss 

Please join Treasure Ballinger for a presentation on 'How to Communicate with People with Hearing Loss, in Second Life and Real Life.' 4PM - Charles Coleman at The Shelter

3PM - The Invisible Band! Live in Unknowable

Alazarin Mondrian and The Invisible Band! perform live a selection of original dynamic space rock music.  Streaming a mix of progressive, experimental and alternative music to SL live from the UK, this hour of music is an alternative for those who's taste runs counter to the acoustic.  In Unknowable.  [SLurl teleport at this link]

3:30PM - Ursula K Le Guin Mixed Reality Reading

Science fiction author Ursula Le Guin will be reading from her novel Always Coming Home at Potlatch 18, a RL science fiction conference.  The Portal will stream live audio and video of this event into Second Life.  If time allows, the reading will be followed by Q & A with the author.   Ursula K. 6:45 – 12:30  Freestar Bay Songwriter’s Pajama Party

Enjoy 5 hours of music from 10 amazing live musicians, in a VERY unique 3D setting with a special pajama party build. For this event musicians such as Harper Messmer,  Allister Westland and Trowzer Boa and many others will play 100% original music and tell the story behind the songs. Freestar Tammas (right) the owner of the venue is a wonderful musician in her own right and will perform for your enjoyment as well.

Come in your favorite PJs, or pick up some free FSB PJs at the event. There are comfortable everywhere pillows for you to lounge on as you listen.  Freestar has created an adorable seating area right up front for tiny avatars. Sunday 3/1

6AM -  Learn to Organize Events 

Learn how to throw successful parties, charity events, music festivals, discussions, protest rallies, and more. During this class you will learn how to bring a crowd to your event, how to attract and manage the best Live Music Artists, DJs, and speakers.  You will also learn how to get the SL press to cover your event (Email me the details – its easy!)  This is an NCI class.  In Caledon Oxbridge Village. Noon – Fox Hunt in Victoriana

Bring your horse and your jodhpurs and enjoy a few 'rounds' of "Fox hunting".  Before anyone gets upset about animal cruelty -- no actual guns are used and no harm is done during the Victoriana Fox Hunts.  In fact, this fun filled event is a glorified game of 'tag' done in a Victorian fox-hunt scenario. Some avatars dress as foxes and the rest of the pack ride horses or wear hound avatars and have lots of fun chasing after the willing "foxes".  If you don't own a horse and want to participate in the spirited fun, free fox and hound avatars will be available for anyone who wishes to take on these roles. 1PM – Premier of SL Shakespeare’s production of Twelfth Night

This is the premier performance of much anticipated SL Shakespeare Company's open-ended run of Twelfth Night, Act .  Performances will continue indefinitely every Sunday at 1 PM and every Tuesday at 6 PM at the SL Globe Theater. 

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is the story of a shipwrecked girl named Viola, who chooses to go incognito as a boy eunuch.  Act 1 establishes the love triangle that Viola, Duke Orsino, and Olivia become entangled in, and introduces some of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters—Malvolio and Feste.  At the Globe Theater in SLiterary.  [SLurl teleport at this link].

3:30PM – Poetry Performance by Serene Bechir at Mystic Cove

3PM - West of Ireland Reception and Beginning of the Festival of St. Patrick

6PM - Blues Heron Live in Aspen Park

Alaskan singer/songwriter, Blues Heron performs in a variety of styles, playing a mix of originals and covers by a wide range of artists. He's known for his strong vocals and guitar style. 7PM – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with Caledonia Skytower  

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a fantasy novel for children by C. S. Lewis. Written in 1950 and set in approximately 1940, it is the first-published book of The Chronicles of Narnia and is the best known book of the series. Tuesday 3/3

Noon – Triathalon Spinning Class 

Join the SL Triathlon group for a unique workout. All you need are a stationary bike or your race bike on a turbo trainer at home in RL. Your avatar sits with us in SL. This is not a race, it is a real class. These take place EVERY Tuesday and Thursday at 12noon PDT (8pm GMT - UK time)   There are music and live (audio) instructions to give you a real spinning workout, just like at your local gym. 5PM - Fricker Fraker Performs Live Native American Flute Music

9AM - The Professor Live in Blacktail Ridge

Event Submission Guidelines:

1. Events for the coming week must be received by Tuesday Noon SLT.
2. Include all the relevant info; day, time, and especially the SLURL to the event location.
3. Please send related graphics such as screenshots or photo of the event site, if available.
4. Events with artistic, cultural, scientific, political, creative, and/or educational value preferred.
5. Events sponsored or promoted by real world corporations are welcome, as long they serve and entertain the Second Life community, and/or foster Resident-made content (live music, builds, scripting, fashion, games, etc.)  Events that merely promote the company or organization's Second Life presence are not generally appropriate; you may instead consider advertising your event or service on New World Notes.
6. Mature-rated events are permissible, but listing descriptions should be PG-13.  Political and religious events are encouraged, though those of an extreme or non-inclusive variety are rarely included.
7. Bonus consideration given to game-related or machinima events, and for events with "I've never seen that in SL before!" value.

Kala Pixie's light show is on March 7th at 3pm slt at (actually way above) Nancy Blake's Pub.
