Click the two screenshots above, because they reveal a significant milestone in the history of the metaverse: at left is me in Second Life. At right is Shenlei Winkler in her OpenSim grid. Now look closer: we're Instant Messaging each other. Full interoperability between virtual worlds may still be a long way off, but real time person-to-person communication channel between them is a substantial step, and it's here now.
How does it work? I just posted the story yesterday on Ostatic, the open source blog, including an interview with Shenlei and its creator, Justin Clark-Casey (known in SL as Lulworth Beaumont.) Screenshot at right courtesy of Shenlei.
this is a great news Hamlet!
Open Sims and SL now look like two neighbours talking each others...
I'm looking forward to see if the crossworld messaging will become a standard or if even it will extend to other platforms.
by the way, Interoperability is still an abstract word, but as you say: the cross IM could be a milestone for the path to come

I must add/advice that this currently only works on a Opensimulator Standalone Sim ! not ! connected to the OSGrid ..
