Yesterday I wrote a GigaOM post
about the new Vivox Voice Toolbar, a pretty impressive-looking browser plug-in that'll enable voice chat across Vivox-supported online games and virtual worlds, or from the web into an MMO, or even hosted on a single web site. Since Vivox provides VoIP support for Second Life, the technology allows for some powerful web-to-SL applications. During the demo, for example, the Vivox guy fired up the web-based dynamic map of Second Life, selected a specific location, and initiated a voice chat with another Vivox exec who was in-world there. According to my notes, that particular use of the Toolbar won't be available immediately (open Beta is next month), but it's a feature to watch for in future iterations of Second Life.Post a comment

A disembodied voice in SL? Would that be the Voice of God(tm) feature?

Wow! Yet another reason not to actually have to interact with that pesky 3D environment!

Hi there - Jennifer from Vivox here. I just want to clarify that the Vivox Voice Toolbar is available next month but we do not know when or even IF Linden will expose the feature.
With that said, we would love to hear ideas from readers and SL residents about connecting the web and the grid.

I'm guessing I already know the answer, but I must ask: will this toolbar plug-in work on Linux?

Thanks, Jennifer, will update accordingly.
Carter, it's for standard web browsers, i.e. Firefox and IE. Isn't there a Linux version of Firefox? Maybe Jen can help clarify.
