Chestnut Rau’s weekly round-up of upcoming SL events…
Students at the University of Texas are planning three days and three nights of fun activity to benefit two important causes. Starting Friday April 24th and running through Sunday April 26th the student Longhorns aim to raise $100,000 Linden Dollars in an event they have aptly called Horns for a Hundred Thousand. The funds will go to support Project Jason, a non-profit organization that works to increase awareness of missing people and assists their families; and Team Fox (in affiliation with Michael J. Fox's Foundation), which provides tools and resources for people who are raising funds for Parkinson's Disease research.
Expect performances by live musicians Harper Messmer, Dann Numbers, Phemie Alcott and many others, go kart races, bumper cars, raffles with free gifts just for playing, and a silent auction. All funds collected will go to Project Jason and Team Fox. In Remora. [Slurl teleport at this link]

Ongoing - "The Cosmosis Experience" by Thoth Jantzen
Thoth Jantzen creates kaleidoscopic designs by incorporating active media textures on the surface of objects or sculptures. The Cosmos Experience consists of 6 different exhibits and visitors teleport between them at their own pace. Visitors to this incredible installation see images moving on the surfaces of sculptures, some of which travel across the exhibit space. Avatars pass through the art and are surrounded by compelling moving images for a true aversive experience.
Before your visit, please make sure you are able to see media/video in SL and you turn it on when you arrive. Since the work is based on textures that are invisible when media is not being displayed, you won't see much if you can't see video. 3:30PM Thinkers: The Gap SL Fills
In his book Second Lives author Tim Guest writes about how virtual worlds offer us what we lack in RL. They are 'a panacea that extends beyond the psychic even to the physical. Like our imagination, they offer us a chance to re-create- and thus relate to- whatever is missing. Is this really the true purpose of VR worlds? To offer a person whatever it is they lack in RL? Would anyone bother with a second life if their first was perfect? Come and discuss it with Extropia DaSilva. All welcome. Please note that Tim Guest is not scheduled to take part in this discussion. Event Submission Guidelines:
1. Events for the coming week must be received by Tuesday Noon SLT.
2. Include all the relevant info; day, time, and especially the SLURL to the event location.
3. Please send related graphics such as screen shots or photo of the event site, if available.
4. Events with artistic, cultural, scientific, political, creative, and/or educational value preferred.
5. Events sponsored or promoted by real world corporations are welcome,
as long they serve and entertain the Second Life community, and/or
foster
Resident-made content (live music, builds, scripting, fashion, games, etc.) Events that merely promote the company or organization's Second Life presence
are not generally appropriate; you may instead consider advertising your event or service on New World Notes.
6. Mature-rated events are permissible, but listing descriptions should
be PG-13. Political and religious events are encouraged, though those
of an
extreme or non-inclusive variety are rarely included.
7. Bonus consideration given to game-related or machinima events, and
for events with "I've never seen that in SL before!" value.
If you'd like an event to be considered, send the description and event information via email to Chestnut Rau at [email protected]. Or contact her in-world via IM.
cool stuff!
