Brilliant young programmer Katharine Berry recently created a very handy API that enables you to publish an automatically updated status message to a website, showing whether you're in Second Life or not. Comes in several flavors appropriate to various contexts, such as a blog or forum signature. I'm using the Javascript version to show my status at the end of this post, and though I'm an utter coding noob, I got it to work on the first try -- it was a simple matter of copying/pasting the code, and replacing "your_name" with "Hamlet_Au". (I also added "Second Life status: Hamlet Au is" in front of the code, and bolded the entire thing.) Seems to take a couple minutes for the query to correctly register your status. Go here to get it. (Hat tip: Peter Stindberg.) Second Life status: Hamlet Au is .

Just a note – this actually dates from early 2007; you can see the original announcement at http://kathar.in/2007/02/online-status-on-the-web/ (though you should note that most of the information given there is invalid now).
It also caches results for two minutes, which is responsible for the delay you noticed.
