The Second Life island called the Spencer Museum of Art [SLurl teleport at this link] is named after a University of Kansas museum of the same name. (Official website here.) A staffer with the museum is currently putting together two juried art shows, “Virtual World/Natural Responses” and “A Prim Life: Photographs from the Virtual World", with the selected entries displayed in SL, and also viewable on a screen in the Kansas museum. Submission deadline is May 1st -- details on the Spencer's Second Life info page. This looks like one of the first juried shows of Second Life-based art sponsored and run by a real world art museum, so that's quite notable. Also notable is what organization is funding the Second Life museum: the United States government. As the site notes, the island's made possible with "a grant from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS), a federal agency." Hat tip: Brooklyn Is Watching. A juried SL art show. There's an interesting idea. I do hope that the receipt of government funding does not influence the selection process, however.
