Wednesday the Lindens reported that 52% of Residents had fully adopted voice communication in Second Life. Crap Mariner has conducted a thoughtful analysis of what they're using voice for, including categories such as Business Communication. Among, er, other categories.

Next to "Newbies asking for sex", you could add a razor-thin slice entitled "Newbies getting sex"... and in between, one entitled "Newbies negotiating price for sex".

Yes SL voice is useful, but is it any good? I'd say its good enough to communicate normally, but quality wise compared to Skype, it's not even close. SL Voice is almost useless if we're recording for quality, there seems to be much more static and noise that Skype eliminates.
I also think they need to add an option where you can mute all avatars except ones you select. If you watch a talk in SL, a seminar for example, I'd much like to be able to turn off voice for everyone except the speaker. Currently you have to manually go into the window and turn down each avatars voice volume and if someone new comes in, you'd have to lower their volume as well. It would be great to be able to edit this from the about land menus so you can toggle which avatars are allowed to speak if an event is going on.
