Ariel Brearly's "Town That Couldn't Forget", posted with artist's permission -- click here for different sizes
Ms. Ariel Brearly is an amazing artist, capable of transforming Second Life screenshots into digital paintings to be besotted by. (I'm not her only admirer; here's another.) Incredibly, though, she merely describes herself as "a learner in Photoshop".
"I like the surreal and the absurd," she adds, "so sometimes I 'stick stuff together' to see how it looks. My photography skills are limited -- I'm a learner in that too -- so often, my pics might come out of a bad shot!" I suspect you'll find that hard to believe, too: see much more of Ariel Brearly's work on her Koinup profile. Read on for details on how she created it, after the break. And see the whole Tableau series here.
To create this essential image, Ms. Brearly tells me, "I had some snaps of various [SL] places, as well as several of my own buildings, and in Photoshop, formed a 'composite' on the back of the sculpted elephant (by Bethi Cattaneo) -- all shot in the Kronbelt sim. I sometimes use Torley's Windlight settings for more of a 'surreal' lighting effect -- this one was 'Chernobyl', I believe. The light details (e.g. at the top of the tower, and streaming from doorways) were picked out using the Dodge tool in Photoshop." Once the composition was complete, she played with various filters, textures, and brushes, creating a custom brush by following an online tutorial. "The textures and filters might go through several different Blending Modes until I'm happy (most often, Soft/Hard Light and Overlay) -- have to say, I'm not very organised with it -- I just experiment until I like the effect."
