Way before Oprah jumped in, Second Life users were heavily using Twitter as a supplement to their metaverse experience. I first heard about it from an SL Resident in 2006, then was there first hand to watch it hit the geekerati at SXSW 2007, where I moderated a talk about virtual worlds with Robert Scoble, who himself was one of Twitter's very early advocates (and talked a lot about it at the panel, as I recall.) Here's some Twitter resources for Second Life users I've written about over the years:
- Metaverse artist Angrybeth Shortbread has a giant Twitter typewriter in Second Life. Visit her lab, jump on the keys, and your Tweet is published in the Twitter feed of "sltypewriter".
- Steampunk programmer Miss Ordinal Malaprop has created a Twitter HUD for sending out Tweets from your own account from within SL.
- Ozzy Wozniak has a very useful Twitter feed for Second Life events at "slurl", which as the name suggests, come with a SLurl teleport link to take you straight from the Twitter webpage to the listed event in-world.
- UK metaverse developer Daden Limited has a Twitter fountain that displays global Tweets as thought bubbles literally rising up from a wellspring in SL.
Many more SL Twitter apps have been developed since then. What are your favorites?
Twitter and Plurk are big parts of the Second Life Residents' lives. I caught your other posts on plurk as well.
