"Hasi" is the name of an oil painting by the artist known in SL as Four Yip, whose unique and evocative works are often based on SL avatars. (I wrote about her last year.) Last week, she put "Hasi" up for auction to benefit Second Life's annual Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.
After the bidding was over, the winner claimed it for L$210,000 -- well over USD$800. This actually isn't the highest auction bid for SL's Relay of Life; I believe that claim still goes to the pink Dominus Shadow muscle car someone purchased anonymously for about USD$1900 in L$, in 2006. However, the bid on Ms. Yip's painting is likely the most paid for a real world item with Linden Dollars.
As for the portrait, "It is hard to tell more about a painting," Four Yip tells me. "I paint and the painting 'talks'. The painting is based on Second Life itself and it isn't a particular avatar." She allows it perhaps most closely resembles her own rabbit-esque avatar. "But the most fabulous important thing," she tells me, "is that this 'funny bunny' raised some great money for Relay for Life." Her next challenge is finding fancy wrapping paper, to ship the painting to its new owner.
