Above left, real life Poid at real life Burning Man -- above right, her Burning Life build in SL on the Burning Man website
A few years ago, the woman known as Poid Mahovlich in Second Life was in the Nevada desert, at Burning Man. She had come there from Europe, and back then, she wasn't even in SL yet. (That's her above, dressed to survive a sandstorm.) That's when she met the photo curator of Burning Man's wesbite in typical Burner fashion (at 4am over shots of Padron tequila at the media mecca, in this case.) Years later, Poid had become a well-known metaverse landscape artist in SL, and Dusty Linden re-introduced her to the Burning Man curator, who uploaded the image you see above right-- the first screenshot from Burning Life added to the Burning Man website. (Viewable in full here.) Burning Man has a number of global regional groups, Poid explains to me, and "Burning Life is the first virtual world Burning Man regional group." No word if the 4am tequila on the playa helped in that process, but it certainly couldn't have hurt. While there's been many strong if unofficial overlaps between Burning Man and Burning Life since the very beginning of SL, this seems to be the first direct official tie between the two freeform art temporary communities. Ironic that this recognition is finally happening at the "end of the Burning Man era". Reminds me a bit of the Emmy that Futurama won after it got canceled.

Well, to me I interpret "end of Burning Man era" to mean the Burner spirit just becomes one small part of a larger whole, still there for people who want to find it. Or to use your analogy, it's like when *Futurama* left FOX for Comedy Central. :)

Actually that is a very good point, Hamlet. I suppose the thing to do is to stay tuned and see what happens next. :)
