Other than the peer pressure to have the latest "look" with Skins, Hair and Clothes, I shop according to my needs -- the same as I do in RL.

Why would social pressure to "keep up with the Jones' be any different in SL than out? Human acquisitiveness is... well... just that... human. To me our range of options for how to respond to this social pressure remains the same.

Given how easy it is to look good without spending significant money (freebies and dollarbies and stuff are so common), I think there's less pressure in SL than in RL to spend money. Because it's less obvious on casual inspection.
I do feel alot of pressure from the goods themselves, of course. "Buy me, buy me", they whisper...
