I think University of Texas creating a massive presence in SL to increase collaboration across depts and campuses is a pretty major real world application.

For me, I'll believe that when a large number of UT students and faculty who are not already SL users themselves start using it regularly, and there's concrete metrics that show it improved their RL productivity in meaningful ways.
