Harper Beresford has a clever use of avatars I've never quite seen before: She customized hers to become a (virtually) living example of the dangers of cigarette smoking. (A former smoker herself, she did so to support an SL friend who just quit.) Hence the saddlebag peepholes, for example: "Sagging baggy eyes from smoking. Smoking causes vascular (blood vessel) problems that can make your blood vessels appear more prominent and bluer beneath the skin and smoking also kills off Vitamin C, which contributes to health and elasticity in your skin."
Go here to see the full annotation. Maybe an ideal way to campaign against smoking in a world where people's avatars seem eternally beautiful and full of health?
Funny, Delora just blogged about how she's quitting smoking on SCD, because as she said to me, "more people knowing makes me more accountable."

A shame Tenshi didn't link through because the blog was a response to Delora's challenge to help her with quitting smoking (and in so doing, help several other people I know). And now even more HAVE to quit after seeing me as an old hag neko.

My avatar has always smoked.
When people ask about it, I say "Doesn't hurt me in the slightest. Robots don't get lung cancer. Talk to the humans who smoke this junk, eh."
I should turn that into a poster.
